I AM BACK!!

Had some business I have been taking care of, so blogging kinda went on the back burner.  Although, I have been collecting some great pictures from this past week!!

As I had been saying, Alvin DID finally make it to OHSU to have an Xray and a CT scan.  Since the CT was added last moment, the doctor appointment had to be rescheduled......HOWEVER, on Friday, July 27, the doctor from OHSU finally responded to the care center about the follow up findings through the CT.  UNFORTUNATELY, Alvin will be wearing the stiff neck collar for about 4 more weeks.  This did come as a disappointment, but being absolutely sure the fracture is strong, 4 weeks is not long at all.  In fact, with the delay of me blogging, he is down to about 3 weeks now......SO, I believe there has been another scheduled trip to OHSU, somewhere around the week of August 20th.  As I find out more information, I will pass it on.

Since the trip to Portland, Alvin has been so nauseous.  All times of the day he is just not feeling up to par. Maybe just maybe it is time to move on to more solid foods.  His progress with standing, get in/out of bed.chair has really been astounding!  He has sure gotten the hang of it!  It is wonderful to watch him, maybe a little slow at first, but when he makes it to his destination, WHAM!! he is smiling strong!!

I did have the opportunity to take him out to the garden area the other day.....It was fabulous.  Rik was so happy to see him out in the sunshine....being careful not to burn...ya never know.  The breeze was soft and a light blanket is all he needed for his arms.  All of the flower photos are from out visit out doors.  the Japanese Maple, Purple one, is his favorite.  He sat and admired it for quite a bit.  He even asked for me to take a photo.  He has really taken a like to my iPad.  He loves that the buttons are large and the pictures are big enough for him to actually see.  I do like to share it too.

Melissa made it in for a short visit today!  She really gave Al a good facial clean up and hair cut.  I know he just loves when she comes, his hair is feeling good for the next few weeks and he knows it!  Anything for a little confidence booster, right?

The SLP, on Friday, talked to Al and I about introducing some new textures into his diet.  Currently he is on the feeding tube for 6 hrs on and 2 off.  Possibly, towards the middle of the month concurrent with the removal of the neck brace,  a mid day light "meal" would be substituted for a couple of hours of the tube feeding, eventually getting him back to regular foods again.  We joked about having a waffle with strawberry jam and whipped cream for a tester.....no one can pass that up!

Rik seems to be doing alright.  Hank went over last Sunday and pulled a tons of weeds around the yard, he discovered a beautiful mini Japanese maple hidden within the tall grasses.  Of course Rik knew it was there, but finally being able to actually see it was like a new gift to the yard.  Hank had to shoo his mom out of the garden when she started to work....he is still watching out for her!!

Overall, everything is going well. With the minor setback of the removal of the collar for now, all else is well. Hope you all enjoy the photos!! Be well!

Enjoying some beautiful sunshine!
Happy & Handsome man!!
Hello Everyone!!
We are "WALKIN AND A WHEELING TODAY!!"

Hope all of you had a fabulous weekend!!  We sure did!  We attending the beautiful wedding of
Matthew Leamer!  It was held at Linda and Chet's house in Washington!  The day was just perfect! Thank you to the Leamer's for including us in this happy event!

Anyhow, AL IS FABULOUS!!  I went and visited him yesterday for a few hours.  He had just finished up with PT and did great!  Again, still, he is making some great leaps and bounds!!  Every day is one more step closer to his goals!!  He has been dressing himself, with minimal assistance, and combing his hair!  He thinks this stuff is so petty, although it really isn't.  We talk about those kind of things when we are together.  I give him my opinions, and he listens.  I really joke with him alot, sometimes down right smart-arsed, but again, he throws it right back!  Throughout my life I have learned to find something good/positive in everything, even when it is hard to do.

MOVING ON!! I had the pleasure of wheeling (I walked, he wheeled) with Alvin today, right out to the garden! YEP HE WENT OUTSIDE!! It was a fabulous day outside, so we took advantage of the sunshine! We looked at all the veggies and flowers that are growing out there! Riley and Andrew, Grandpa Jones sat by the fountain!! I took a picture for you!! As I said in previous posts, Al's Great Grandson's really liked the garden area when they were down visiting. The air was warm, just a slight breeze, but the sky and river was breath taking. Alvin joked about getting a sunburn! We wheeled over past the tomato plants, where there are 4 tomatoes about the size of a quarter in diameter. Hmph!! I am still waiting for the tiniest of tomatoes to show on my own plants at home!! The different types of lettuce are starting to grow taller and the peppers are about 8" tall! There were also many different flowers. Snap dragons, some big white flower, and several others! It is just a beautiful place to be...It was a great change of pace for Alvin. He took many deep breaths of fresh air....and said it really smelled good.

Tomorrow is the OHSU field trip for Al!  He is having Xrays and an appointment with the surgeon that did his neck surgery.  We are hoping he returns from his trip with a soft neck collar!! Say your prayers, cross your fingers, and whatever else you choose to make this happen!  Al and I have also talked about IF he remains IN the collar.  This would obviously be a little upsetting.  BUT WE WILL CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN IN EITHER CASE!!

I trimmed up his mustache today, getting it out of his nose and off of his lips.  "It really tickles", he says.  So slowly I used my handy dandy little buzzer and whacked off a bunch of hair around the tickle spots of his mouth....poor guy!  Hank and I have told him we will figure it out on Thursday, the next step to getting him clean shaven once again.  I also trimmed his finger nails.  this made me a nervous wreck!!  I just knew I was going to get 'em!  However, all is well, he still has all of his fingers and I will once again do his nails another day, this time with confidence....a little anyway.  I also had a little file to make sure he didn't have and rough spots...I cant even stand that!!

I went and picked up Rik this afternoon and brought her to see her darling husband, he was anxiously awaiting her arrival!  She really enjoyed seeing the picture of him in the gardens!  She said, "isn't he just as handsome as ever?"  She had on a nice summery colored t-shirt and looks pretty good.  She is doing alright health wise.  She is still pretty tired though.  I think she should participate in therapy with Alvin.  She has the option, and I think they as a couple would help each other out.  I have talked to her about it a little bit, but I don't think she is sure about it.....

Overall, the weekend was fabulous, and all is well.  Hope this post finds you all in happiness and good health!

Happy Friday!!

Dad & Chuck visiting!

Rik visitng Alvin fresh from CMH,
Chuck Anderson in the back!
Everyone is all smiles!

Today is really a happy day!  After being at CMH since Tuesday, Rik was released early this   afternoon!  Her Xrays still show a few spots on her left lung, however all her tests are coming back very well.  kevin picked her up from the hospital, and where did she go??  Yep, you guessed it, straight over to see Alvin!  After a short visit, Kevin took her home to rest.  She will be taking a couple of antibiotics to keep her strong and to clear up any residual crud.  Her color was spectacular  and she said she was feeling so much better!  Thank you all again for all the well wishes and prayers for her, clearly the Heavens are listening.
Yesterday, Hank & I attended Alvin's medical conference with the whole team of Al's "helpers."
It was decided by the team that in approximately 4 weeks, he should be heading home!  YES I SAID IT!!!   HEADING HOME!!!  WOOT!! WOOT!!  In 3 weeks, the OT will take Alvin on a feild trip to their house in Hammond.  At that time, she will assist him with a complete walk through of the house, porches and yard.  While in the house, she will be taking notes to set up a plan of assistance for any changes that may be needed.  He will receive information about resources and help from the community.  Basic needs for him may be quite extensive considering the age of the home, claw foot tub, doorway threshholds, stairs, bed, etc.  He however has already said he is not getting rid of his beloved claw foot tub.....no problem.  This news is so exciting!  He participated in the meeting too.  He told everyone how blessed he is and how proud of himself he has become since he has made so much progress.  He even showed them how much stronger his left hand is now compared to before the fall!!  Everyone sure has enjoyed working with him.  99.98% of the time, he is so pleasant and friendly....The SLP also stated in the meeting that they were going to proceed with a Modified Barium Swallow, pending the reults of the appointment at OHSU next week. The hard brace MUST be removed for this test, so all precations are being taken!

Parallel bars Alvin uses to walk forwards and backwards!
Al preparing to use his walker....
he is tip toeing his chair to just the right spot
Alvin up and adam with his walker!!

This week, Al has walked way past his and his PT's expectations!  His goal for yesterday was 75', he went over 100', with just a short rest...he also went down to the therapy room and enjoyed talking with some of the other residents and worked himself hard on the hand peddle bike....again he scored a 98%.....!  He has also been using a treatment called Diathermy, a form of physical therapy in which deep heating of tissues is accomplished by the use of high-frequency electrical current, heat therapy...there isnt really a "feeling" if it is working, however using helps with the inflamation....
Today, he got up and sat in his wheelchair and then proceeded to " walk" his was around the third floor!  He said his legs were ready to run right out of the building, but he knew his favorite aides would miss him!  LOL  I am sure it was a sense of liberation for him!  His legs also appreciated the new work out!
Overall, in my opinion, the next few weeks are going to fly by!  Getting everyting ready at the house and just the pure emotion knowing his homecoming is right around the corner.  Let's all take a deep breath and breathe.....ya, you did it didnt you??

Tomorrow, most of us are going out of town to attend a family wedding at Linda's house in Aberdeen, WA.  Lani and Rik are staying in town to be with Al and so Rik doesnt get too overwhelmed.  But we will all be back in to give Alvin a hard time on Sunday....oh wait, maybe it's just me that teases him...but I know he loves it....he throws it right back.

Hope all of you have a fabulous weekend!  Enjoy the pictures!!

Sorry I skipped Tuesday's Update!  We didn't get home until late so I just went to bed!
As most of you may already know, Rik was admitted to CMH for pneumonia yesterday afternoon.
APPARENTLY, during her doctors appointment on Friday, she was given some antibiotics but was also instructed to go to CMH to be checked in for a few days.  HOWEVER, she did not tell anyone about that part until yesterday afternoon!  Lani took her to CMH where the orders were waiting for admit.  She is on an antibiotic IV drip along with fluids.  Her health has been a little poor, and she of course, not wanting to call attention to herself, didn't relay the severity.  She hid it well.  Although, over the weekend, she managed to vacuum, clean the bathroom, do the dishes and a few other chores just so they would be done before she checked in.....STRONG WOMAN!

Hank & his Mom at CMH
Hank and I went down to visit with her last night once she was situated.  Jan, Kevin and Lani were also making their rounds.  Her spirits were up and she was cozy in the bed with a nice toasty blanket fresh from the warmer.  We also let her know that Dudley, their sheltie, was safe and sound at our house playing with Mattie.

This afternoon I made my rounds.  Went to see Rik first, because I knew Al would ask about her.  The night before I had used my new iPad....yep I got one, gotta love the barter system, and took pictures of Rik and Hank and also of Al and I.  Between the two, they loved the pictures.  I really think the iPad is going to be a fun thing for all of us to share with!  You will know what I mean when you see the silly pictures we did!
Anyhow, back to my rounds.......
Went in to see Rik and she was sitting in her chair with a huge plate of fresh fruit and cottage cheese.  As she daintily ate, she told me about her busy morning.  First thing she went and had an Xray of her lungs.  She said that the spots on her left side were present, but small.  her color was definitely better today too.  She also walked around the entire hospital!  She said, "I swear they took me up and down every isle in this building!"  She was a little embarrassed wearing the hospital robe she said.  She thought everyone must thing she was silly.  I reminded her she was in a hospital, and that she should be thankful her buns weren't peering from the back!!  LOL  She quickly agreed!!  As we talked, she continued to eat all of her cottage cheese and fruit....this is probably the most I have ever seen her eat!  She told me about her french toast breakfast and lukewarm coffee.  She ate that too!  Of course her appetite has been next to nothing since Al has been away.  It is just great to see her helping herself for a while.  I brought her one of Al's soft and fuzzy blankets that I had just pulled from the dryer before I came in.  But instead of keeping it, she said I should take it do Al, besides she didn't want to mess up the good thing she had going with the blankets from the warmer whenever the nurse comes in, which is usually often.  This was so cute to hear her say. She slept well last night, and that's when she figured out the "warm blanket system".  Her doctor came by last night and told her he would like her to stay until Friday....of course longer if needed.  I told her to think of it as a hiatus at a spa!!  Nice adjustable bed, (I love hospital beds), cozy warm blankets, room service, walks on an indoor track, cable....RIGHT?  Now that she was finished eating all her fruit and cottage cheese, she noticed another covered plate.  She thought it was the cover for her fruit.....as she opened it, there was a beautiful plate of stir fry veggies with chicken I believe......evidently, she circled both, thinking fruit was for lunch and veggies for dinner....NOPE!  But it did really smell good!  She offered it to me but I declined.  Now if it were chocolate.....I would have jumped right on it!  LOL  We also talked about the movie Murphy's Romance.  She said it was a bit of a chick flick, yes, her words, but I would probably love it.  I really admire Sally Fields.  She is going to have Lani get a copy of it for me.I asked if there was anything she needed before I headed out to visit her other half.  She told me to tell him that she totally understands about the pain in the butt!  "I have only been here for one night and my butt is getting awfully sore!"  I assured her I would tell him and share that they are both having a "pain in the arse."
On that silly note I then headed out to visit Al.  thankfully the two facilities are close to each other, and close to my house too.....makes it so much easier!  I arrived to see Alvin and he was just finishing up his PT.  He was sitting in the wheelchair and then used a walker and walked over to the bed and sat down.  BEAUTIFUL!!  Again, his strength is better today than yesterday....it IS really that apparent, to me anyway.  He had walked down the hall about 25' before really needing to walk faster to get back to his room.....He needed to commode!  Again, especially with his wonderful chocolate milk high fiber feeding tube diet, knowing and being able to control his stool is a great feat!  Could you do it?  Sorry for the visual, but it is hard to control....with any pride left.  So, HE DID MAKE IT!!  Moving on....his morning too was very busy.  OT first thing at 8:30am, then the SLP joined in while he was upright and had him swallow melting ice chips. His swallowing has gotten much harder, meaning stronger, and he is able to handle about 90% of his secretions without using suction.  Clearing the throat is still kind of hard, but we practice often....
Of course, after getting back into bed he asked about his bride.....I relayed all the good news and showed him the picture of her and Hank from the night before.  We also talked about him not worrying about her.  I told him she is in the best place she could be, with a staff of incredible nurses!! He knew these nurses well when he was in CMH, Hank too for that matter!!  Rik is actually in the same room Alvin was in when he was released from the CCU.  Michael, Jan's boy was also in this same room years earlier with his back injury.  It has been a positive vibe room for this family, so it shall continue!  Alvin was quite tired after the PT and his busy morning so I got him all situated and left him with happy thoughts of Rik being at "the SPA"

Again tomorrow I will do my rounds and get more pictures.  Hope you are all healthy and happy!
Gotta love the iPad!!
Alvin got a kick out of this!

A little more serious!!

Had a fabulous visit with Al today!!
He is so proud of himself...and we should all be also.  He was alert and admiring the beautiful day outside.  He and I also talked about going to the garden soon.  (Andrew and Riley, I will take pics for you when we are out there!!)  When you come for another visit, you guys will be able to take him out too!

He went down to the PT room this morning with his OT.  With both the OT/PT he used the parallel bars today to walk over 80 steps!  He walked forward and backward with the assistance of the bars.
He also did 98% of his bike workout, pedaling and all......Al was so proud of himself here also, because the person before him only did 90% of her workout.....so Al KNEW he did a great job!  He was very excited to tell me all about it, while I massaged his aching feet and legs.  (I will talk about anything...just to get a foot massage....HANKY POO WHERE ARE YOU??)  He will kick my butt for sure now. LOL

Al is seeing his own progress.  This in itself is a major breakthrough for him.  We as spectators have seen little bits of strength and progress, but telling him about what we see isn't the same as actually seeing and feeling it.  For him, he has turned the corner!!  GREAT NEWS!!  He DOES see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it is shining bright from his home!!  He has also found that by using the blue ball in his left hand, his strength has become much better.  this is the hand he has had issues with for quite some time now, not just since the fall.  He showed me today, with the ball in left hand, that he was gripping it, but at the same time trying to throw it out of his hand.....it stayed!!  His grip is substantially better......it is truly amazing to see him have that joy in his voice/head/soul again.

While massaging Al's legs today, and yesterday, I notice that the rash is going away.  I think being up out of bed is helping the vessels to strengthen also.   Every little bit helps!!  I think also that since he was started on a little dose of an anti-depressant has helped him a ton too.  This without him even knowing it.  He is aware that he is taking it, but may not have been aware that he really needed it.  After about 3 days of it though, I did notice his change.  I am sure once he is home, and things mellow out, he will be able to taper off.

I feel in my heart that things are going to be alright. He has his appointment at OHSU on July 25th, so hopefully he will be scratching his neck in relief that evening!!  He is really looking forward to the appointment, and hear some good news.  Keep your fingers crossed and say an extra prayer!

On Friday, when Kevin arrived for a visit, he got to Al's room and he wasn't there...He was off being busy in the dining area.  He listened to a few stories being told and looked at the "library" section.  Here there are several different books, movies, books on tape etc.  He didn't find anything at the time but told me about it.  He thought it was funny that he was "out" when someone arrived to visit.  Kevin too thought this was great I am sure!!

On Saturday, Alice came to visit Al.  He had such a great visit!  He was looking forward to her coming.  I think it was the first visit for them since the fall.  thank you Alice.....your brother loves you!

Sunday, Jeff and his niece and nephew stopped in for a visit!  the kids brought a beautiful card for Al.  They also drew fun things to fill the blank space in the card.  He just loved it!  At first I didn't recognize Jeff, I have only met him a few times.  I thought he was a lost person...lol, then of course Hank and I realized it was Jeff!!  Al was so happy to have him visit.

Sunday afternoon, when Hank and I were about to head home, I went to the "library" area and found a book on tape for him.  We set it up and left him to create visions in his head. He told me how much he liked it today.  Sometimes it is hard for him to focus on the TV or DVD player with all the hustle and bustle going on around him.  Having the images in his head was a little more relaxing.  He was telling me about the story and said that the characters were making out in the bushes!!  LOL  I was almost embarrassed, but he thought it was great.  Again, every little thing helps!

Rik is home resting herself.  She is doing a great job at keeping herself away from her love.  I know it is a gruelling task not to see her love on a daily basis, but it is also just as important to keep herself healthy and well.  Al and Rik enjoyed a telephone conversation while Jan was there visiting today.

Again, thank you for all the prayers and well wishes.  Alvin is getting stringer by the day!

HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH!!!  HOPE EVERYONE IS SAFE AND SOUND......
Today however is my beautiful cousins Birthday so I think of it as a happy day...lol

Made it in to see Al a few times today!  I arrived this morning and he was having upper leg stimulation using a TENS type unit performed  for 10 minutes intermittently by the PT.  (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) Gently, she upped the "shock" just until his leg would jump a little.  The first time it delivered, it kind of "shocked" him, YES, PUN INTENDED!!  Evidently, years ago he had a TENS unit hooked up to his back, and some how while exiting the car, the button was pressed down long enough to give him one heck of a jolt!  WHAMMY!!  So, I don't blame him for being a little apprehensive!  I too own and use a TENS unit on my back and shoulders, I absolutely love mine...sometimes I do give myself a jolt once in a while....keeps us on our toes...LOL Overall, is worked his leg muscles without tuckering him out.
Alvin receiving a "shocking" treatment. He dozed off in between sets, no pain...

This stimulation may have helped his legs relax too.  With the PT, he stood, walked to the in room sink, to his wheelchair and back to his bed, this being about a 9ft walk (triangle).  He said it really felt good to straighten his back, and again with the relief of the arse pain.  Al also requested to be taken into the shower this morning BEFORE OT!!  This sounds like the Al I know!!  Trying to prep for the upcoming day of OT/SLP/PT....all three were completed by about Noon, he got to have the rest of the day off.....

While the PT was still with Al, I noticed red splotches on his shins and ankles.  I asked what this was, it was not there yesterday, and she said maybe it was Petechiae.  I took a photo, and researched a little bit.  I included a link that explains a bit about the disease.  I also mentioned and had the RN come check it out, she assured me she would keep an eye on it.  There is no pain, itching or raised bumps, so this is typical of poor circulation she said....and possibly because of all the extra time being up on his feet or upright period.  If anyone finds out any more helpful information, please let me/us know!!
Right shin & ankle.
The dark bruise and come and gone three different times now.
Photo upside down.  This is his left ankle.

Alvin is really looking good other than having the polka dots....his color is great, mouth issues are gone, his hands and arms are able to grasp and push buttons!!  This is very, very good news.  Today, he was wondering about Rik's doctor appointment, so he used his iPhone and called Lani!!  This is the first time he has used his phone on his own!  Even the fact that he had to ask for it to be closer to him is huge!  Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks....lol
Unfortunately, Rik received the news from her doctor that she has a mild case of pneumonia herself.  She has been pretty run down lately, so for the next 48 hours or so, she must stay home and rest....I am sure she will.  She does understand that she needs to be strong and take care of herself.
I spoke to the evening RN tonight and asked her to please make a note that Al is being rotated and up as much as possible this weekend.  Hoping for a better upcoming Monday than last.  Sometime the weekend staff doesn't get him out of bed, leaving the Monday staff to deal with the repercussions of his pain and stiffness.  I think that is what happened last Monday when he didn't want to participate much with the OT.
From what we hear, Alice and Marlene are coming to visit on Saturday!  Al is really looking forward to this time with his family!  It will be a great distraction also, since Rik's presence may be missed by him alot.  Talking with Jan and Hank this evening, we plan on making sure Al's spirits are up, even though his wife is down.  Hank is also going over in the morning to work in the yard....making sure MOM has everything she needs.
Hope all of you have a fabulous weekend.  Oh, and if anyone could possibly spare a little sunshine, please send it our way!  Thank you!  Hey Jeff W., did you find any typos this time??  lol

Happy HUMP Day everyone!!  This is the time of week that we are all totally exhausted and somehow strive to make it to Friday.......HHMMPH!

Well mark your calendars everyone!!  Alvin sat up for over 2 1/2 hours today!!  He had his first chair shower, where they put him in a special chair and wheel him off to the walk in type shower along with an aide.  As I arrived this morning, dad was being carted off.....I warned him I would be there when he returned!!  As I was returning from the nurses station, I met right up with Alvin as he was being wheeled back to his room.  His hair was sticking up all over after the towel was removed and he looked to be grimacing a bit, I asked if he was having pain and he said, "No, not really, just a pain in the ass, and I have gas!"  LOL  Yep he is in a great mood today....he said these things with that smart ass attitude with that little sparkle in his eye....I had to come back with....."Are you being a pain in the ass, or do you have a pain in the ass...."  He then said..."I don't know, you tell me......"  He totally cracks me up!

Before his shower he had participated in his daily OT /SLP.  We did rearrange his room a little today too.  The aide could not grasp in his head that the wheel chair would not fit between the foot board of the bed and the sink while Alvin was sitting in it.  SO......after scooting Al into the hall, he moved the bed all sorts of directions and then finally got the wheelchair out....it was a hilarious moment to watch really.  It took all my might but I did just sit on the chair and watch and not laugh out loud....In a day or two I think with the help of his day nurse, we are going to again fix his room while he is away in the therapy room.  There are extension cords to step over and get the IV stand moved over...the white board is above his head....just awkward.  He and I discussed where HE would like to be...facing the window, closer to TV, his preference....everything just needs to be accessible, for his reach not the convenience of the staff....well ok, some of that too.

After his shower, the PT was going to visit in about 2 hrs, so he opted to sit in his wheelchair until she arrived.  The PT had mentioned that she may want to take Al downstairs to the therapy room today, so he figured it was easier to stay put than to get up and down over and over again.  It was great to see him upright.  However, he did experience some gas, without passing anything.  The cramps were painful so they treated him with Maalox.  He also had his pain meds, so after a little bit, the edge was gone.  When the PT arrived, she was so impressed with Alvin's choices to sit up !  He even got rewarded, helping him back to bed and doing a bed based workout so he could be more comfortable.  I told him that working hard on his own will would pay off!!  LOL  Again, everyday he is achieving something new.  Just love his progress!!

I picked up Rik today and took her down to see her love.  She felt a little better today too.  She has been a little run down, as to be expected, but I assured Al that his darling bride would be taken care of.  Jan came in during her lunch break, as regularly scheduled.  Al really looks forward to her visits.  Even 10 minutes after noon he starts asking about if Jan is coming....just loves his visitors!!

Al is scheduled on July 25 to go to OHSU for an Xray and a follow up with the orthopedic surgeon about his neck.  At this time we are hoping to hear the words....You can now take the hard collar off, use a soft collar as needed.......but time will tell.  The transporting part of this appointment is a concern at the moment.  Hopefully somehow, this appointment could be done at CMH.  I will be finding out this information by the end of this week.

Over all, Alvin had a pretty darn good day.  He really pushed himself to sit up for a very long time.  He chose to be in his chair and upright, even though the gas pains were harsh.  I turned on the TV and found the OPB channel and Bob Ross was on painting "happy little trees"  Al liked this.  We talked about how Rik would often watch his techniques.  I also shared the story of my son Brian, now almost 18, when he was a little (r) boy, he would prefer to watch Bob Ross rather than cartoons.  It was so cute.  Bob makes it look so easy doesn't he?

Well, until tomorrow, have a fabulous evening!!

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Hello everyone!!  Hank and I had a fabulous time in The Dalles Friday and Saturday!  Believe it or not, I had not been that direction during the daylight hours, so the sights were amazing to me!  We stayed at the Shilo right at the Dalles Dam!  While Hank was in his business meeting, Mattie and I went for a nice stroll by the water!  It was totally breathtaking!  Saturday morning, we started home very slowly, seeing as much as we could in the heat!!  It was 95 on Friday, that's a far cry from the "norm" of around 65 in Astoria....I thought I was going to melt....

Anyhow, while we were gone, Jan and I texted back and forth talking about Al.  I really missed him...I know it may sound weird, but I did.  Silly old guy anyhow.

Today started out a little rough for Al.  He had an attitude. Who knew, right?  LOL  He wasn't into doing any OT first thing this morning, so he didn't participate very much.  Get this, the nurses said he was being "stubborn".....WHAT?  Alvin Jones stubborn.....I just knew it couldn't be our wonderful Al... So, before I arrived at the care center, I went and picked up Rik....Yep, she was ready to rip him a new one...ok so she was actually worried about him.  She went right to his side and told him that he better do what ever it takes to come home to her...you know, in that sweet, gruff, MOM voice.  I think she even gave him "the look."  Yep, you kids know what I am talking about...But of course Dad was all darling when Rik was there.

Well, he was the first one to admit he may have been a little short with the therapist.  As his hair was being washed in a nice warm cap, he talked about how he may have hurt the therapists feelings, and that he felt ashamed of being so rude.  So, after his bed bath was done and he was all handsome once again, his spirits were much better.  The PT came in and when Al told her about the OT situation, she said that she was going to have to work him twice as hard.....joking....kinda. LOL

To be honest, in the past 10 days or so, his strength has gotten alot better.  He assists himself more when rolling to either side, he can schooch his buns to the edge of the bed, and today he used his urinal with the assistance of an aide.  He did this while he was sitting instead of laying.  WOOT WOOT!  Sorry if that was too much information, but sometimes he achieves things that really make a big difference in his daily care!  He also got into his wheelchair with the assistance of a walker and the PT.  Slowly but surely he is making progress.  The PT is showing me how to assist him when he would like to do things.  Getting him into the chair more often will be so good for his mind, body and soul.

April, when you bring the boys back down, Grandpa Al should be ready to go to the garden and see the fountain!  Since Andrew was here, Al and I have been talking about going out to the healing garden to enjoy the fresh air and sights of the area.  You can see the river, fountain, growing veggies and flowers...this in itself will help him feel better.  He really misses that yard of his at home.  Very thankful for Hank mowing and helping Rik keep it lush, it is as gorgeous as always, but misses Alvin's touch.

Tomorrow PT is going to start taking Al downstairs to the therapy room.  There he can use a variety of things to gain strength.  They also have Virtual Therapy.  This I think would be great for Rik to do with him also.  Maybe once he gets into a better routine he can show her how it is done.  Rik is holding up very well.  She sure keeps herself busy with walking Dudley, the yard work and visiting her love.  She is pooped out in the evenings though.  I think she would benefit from a little PT herself.  She sure is a trooper.

Rik brought a couple cards she received for Al.  Julia, your cards is PRICELESS!!  Alice, we are all looking forward to your visit this weekend!  Especially Al!

Hope you all have a fabulous evening.  Enjoy the photos of today.....More to come.

This is Al and his Speech therapist....she is working on his swallowing.  Today, he enjoyed some Sierra Mist, swallowed it well and had no spit up secretions.....PROGRESS!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful and safe 4th of July!!

Went in to visit Alvin this morning and he was in a fabulous mood!  His legs were doing the two step in bed, because Al was moving them all over, just because he can.  Oh, and because the PT/OT had not been in yet to suck the life out of him as he says.  LOL  They do really work him to get him moving.  Al also enjoyed petting Mattie today.  Mattie just wanted to get under Al's blankets and cuddle, however stepping on his legs and belly would probably be a part of that, so she hangs out on my lap beside the bed where Al can reach her.

Al's lips are healing so well and his mouth is doing pretty darn good too.  The morning nurse really takes care of Al's oral hygiene, and he appreciates it alot!  He refuses to use the "swish & spit" type medicine to rid his mouth of any cooties.  I really don't blame him, that stuff is so nasty, and with his neck brace, it is just that much more nasty because he isn't able to spit it all out.  It also gives him heartburn.  He is also using the toothbrush we brought him, so with all the extra attention to his oral care, I think he will be just fine.

Yesterday, the PT got Alvin standing on his feet!!  I was not there, but he told me all about it.  His first words were...."My butt definitely liked standing, but I am not too sure my legs did."  Al is gaining strength so fast now.  Today he sat in his wheelchair and even on the commode, sshhhh that's just between us.  (FYI he used the commode too)   This in itself is a Hugemongous step.  Not only in his recovery, but in his own mind.  Being stuck in a bed immobile is really taxing on his self esteem.  Again, this is just my opinion.  I think he is doing great.  He may not be able to see the progress, but I sure can.  Definitely moving in the right direction, finally.

Thank you Alice for the sweet comment in your card to Alvin.  We all thank you so much for all the kind words.  Rik has tried to contact Alice, however she keeps getting a recording the phone is out of order, so Marlene or Sharon, if you could please get her number to Rik it would be greatly appreciated.

Hank and I are heading to The Dalles for a meeting on Friday and staying the night, then traveling back at a slow pace on Saturday.  Hank is going to play tour guide and show me the Bonneville Dam, the fish counters and many more places....I am so excited!!  I did tell Alvin that I would miss him a bunch but we should be back Saturday evening, and if not too late, we will stop by.

Again, hope all of you had a great Holiday.

ALVIN HAS BEEN UPGRADED FROM BED REST TO MOVEMENT AS TOLERATED, BUT MUST KEEP THE NECK BRACE ON AT ALL TIMES!!

This means that he can now move from his bed to a wheelchair with the assistance of the staff or therapists!  This is so huge!!  The OHSU Spine doctor read the reports and looked at Al's neck xray from Friday and determined that his neck is healing very well!!

I arrived today just before the PT got there.  Had a moment to talk with Al and ask how his night was and he said, I'm not sure, I was sleeping!"  Just love his humor!  However, yesterday he wasn't in such a good mood.  Sadly, he felt "lonely" on Sunday afternoon when no one visited after 3:30.  Monday morning he was very emotional.  After 7 weeks in a hospital bed and not being able to do "normal" things, he just cracked.  Poor guys didn't want the therapy, didn't want anything.  I had taken his fuzzy socks home to wash them and when I put the back on, I told him that when he is wearing the fuzzy socks, there is no way he could be in a bad mood.  then, his toes stared wiggling and he did have a smile.  (even though he tried to hide it and be grumpy).

But today, he was all smiles and feeling alot better.  He was so apologetic to the therapists and he even tried extra hard today to out do himself at therapy.  The PT used the resistance bands on his ankles and knees today.  I told him he was going to have buns of steel when he gets home!  It is truly amazing to see his strength.  It will even more beautiful to see him and his sore arse get out of bed and into a chair for a change of pace.  the care center has many activities throughout the week.  I have been telling him about the bingo games and the garden....soon we will be participating.  The interaction with the others will help him so much.  With the outgoing attitude Al has, he will be one of the cool kids in the joint!!  When scooching tot he edge of the bed today, he was giggling about his "flabby skin" dragging him down.  He is so funny sometimes.

The charge nurse is worried that the thrush in his mouth may be trying to return so she really gave his mouth and tongue a scrubbing this morning.  Hank and I brought him a Winnie the Pooh small, soft toothbrush so he could scrub his mouth at his convenience....he loves it.  Likes the Pooh on his toothbrush too! lol

Jan got him a large calendar for his wall so he could see the dates.  being so confined, he has lost track of the date...just sometimes, especially if he does sleep and then wake up at odd times. (don't we all do this??)  We also got him a whiteboard to write notes on.  Unfortunately when I was putting it up, I didn't think about its location so much.  SO, I do need to move it somewhere different, in better view.  The PT comes in in the mornings and writes his PT/OT/SLP schedule down so he can plan for the "brutality" as he says....again, we should all be so proud of him.  He really is trying hard to be well.

Slowly but surely Al is making some great progress.  In my opinion, being more mobile will be a huge step in his recovery.  I am sure he will feel a huge burden off his shoulders as he reaches each new goal.

Thank you again friends and family for all the prayers and kind words.  Al loves hearing all the feedback from his loved ones.  Keep saying those prayers!!  Everyday is full of new challenges.  With all the support, this too will become much easier!

I took some pictures of the flowers and kinds words friends and family have sent. His room is starting to be a little more personal instead of so institutional. This too will help him feel more at ease. In his words, I don't know why all of you fuss about me so much, but I am so thankful you do."

Alvin loves this ball I got him.  He uses it to exercise his hands, feet and after it is all washed and clean, he likes to put it on his forehead because it feel "kinda weird"

These are some of the cards and kind words that he sees everyday.

We got him some of this mouth rinse to help with the foul taste of the swabs to moisten his mouth.  He also uses this on his Winnie the Pooh toothbrush and lets out a big "AHHHH"

April, these are the flowers you brought him!
Yep, I have been changing the water often and they are just beautiful!

This is a bouquet that Hank and I brought in.  I hope they last a long time like his others.

this is the window view from Alvin's room.  It is a beautiful archway that looks over several old homes.  He looks where people are parked when he is sitting on the edge of his bed.
