GREAT NEWS!!
Now is the time to do our happy dance!! **wiggle wiggle**
Alvin has had his hard neck collar removed and a soft removable collar has taken its place!! X-rays showed that the neck fracture has healed!!! He was taken by ambulance, this is normal, up to OHSU on Tuesday night. He will be arriving in Seaside to stay at the Providence Rehab center for about 20 days!
Okay, now for more details of the past few wild and crazy days.....
On Monday, CMH held a family meeting for us all to discuss Al's discharge information. Jan, Kevin, Rik, Lani and myself attended this hour long meeting. We talked about Al's placement after discharge, some insurance questions were answered and overall, a pretty informative plan. It is exciting knowing that he will be home very soon!
Alvin had a modified barium swallow done on Monday afternoon, however with the hard collar on the results were not very productive. Before leaving OHSU on Thursday, he will have had another swallow test, hopefully more productive!! He is still on 24/7 tube feed, so getting him back to basics will be the next step. Everyone.....again pray those awesome prayers! We have seen these prayers work right before our eyes.....THANK YOU!
Going to Seaside Care will be fabulous! 24 hr care right in the hospital...all therapists are there. Most of all, the most important thing, Alvin will be cared for the way it should be!! We are all excited to see his progress over the following weeks...Al of course is TOTALLY STOKED!
Melissa came down on Tuesday. We are all so thankful for her arrival. She KNOWS the real questions to ask and knows whats what! PHEW! I am speaking for myself of course but personally Hank and I needed a little mental break. Knowing that Melissa is here, with Rik, taking care of business, to me, is a huge deep breath of fresh air for our minds. THANK YOU MELISSA!!
Rik looked fabulous this afternoon when they stopped by after their long trip from Portland. I had made some potato soup, cheddar biscuits and peanut butter cookies this afternoon and was happy that Melissa stopped by to pick up their "to-go" order to take home. Sometimes fixing dinner, even the simplest of simple, is just too much for one day. I am sure Rik has had the weight of her stresses lifted a bit, hoping she sleeps well this evening. Her health has really been well. Slowly but surely she is working hard in the yard. I call it therapy when I work in my yard. Get this....you may want to hold on to something because what I am about to say is unbelievable! Ready?? Rik has been using a machete looking sickle, did you read that? A SHARP SICKLE!! She uses it to whack away the weeds around the rocks in her garden!! Lil ole Momma Jones is whacking away with a machete sickle!! Maybe you didn't find that news incredible but it totally blew me away when she told me and showed the sharp a** tool to me. Remind me to never get on her bad side!!! Watch Out!! Sorry for the explicits but it is true! She amazes me. Great woman!! Tough. Simply wonderful.
Anyhow... A little bit of humor, we all knew on Tuesday afternoon that Alvin was to be transported to OHSU at 9. So the plan was for Melissa, Rik and Kevin to follow behind the ambulance to OHSU. So, 7:30 this morning Hank arrived to visit Al and he was gone. Hank asked where he was and they said, " oh, they transported him LAST NIGHT at 9 PM!! Who knew they would go at 9pm not 9am?? So Hank called to let Melissa know and they all had to hustle and bustle to get up there to see what was going on. Just one of those things that make you think....WHO KNEW?? Lol just glad all was well and there were no emergencies....
Over the weekend Rik's brothers Herbie and Wendell came to visit! What a great little reunion it was! There are some great photos below!
Thank you again everyone for your love, understanding and prayers!

Hello again everyone!! Sorry it has been so long since the last update!
Time to get right to business, have a lot to say today!
Monday morning Alvin was taken back to CMH! He really did not want to go however after talking with him briefly he made the choice to go back to the hospital! He was also admitted that same day. This IS really where he needs to be for now and I am so thankful he made the choice to do so.
Unfortunately, he again has pneumonia, MRSA, thrush and an intense UTI! He is on IV supplying antibiotics and fluids. He is also taking breathing treatments every six hours. His urine was so dark, and I mean almost coffee dark, now it is just a little amberish. He is once again using his urinal by his own power, maybe a tad of help! Also, he IS in isolation again so gowns and gloves are required. This is a setback in his progress, however we really don't say that out loud. He already knows in his heart.
Today he is looking so much better though. Jan went in to visit on her lunch hour and since he had a visitor I proceeded over to the care center with a large rolly suitcase and packed ALL of his stuff. It has been decided by him and some family that he should not return to that center and just proceed home. We made this decision very carefully.
Backing up a few days to last week...
Friday, August 17, I had the pleasure of taking Alvin in our car to his house! The OT followed behind and we did a walk through of their house! If I didn't know better I would say he almost ran up those front porch steps right into the kitchen table and had a seat! The look on Rik and Al's face was priceless! Talk about being happy!! Their granddaughter Leisel was down for a few days from Alaska so she was also at the house to see this beautiful sight! This family is amazing! I am so thankful to be a part of it!
Anyway, the walk through went excellent! The past few weeks, Lani and Rik had a family friend do some modifications on the doorway thresholds, sanding them down or replacing them. Huge improvement! Alvin used a walker throughout and had no problem whatsoever clearing them! He also relaxed in a chair in the TV room, sat on their bed, which has been moved from upstairs down to the front living room area! Their beautiful brass bed is a touch high, however even simply removing the egg crate type pad on the bed will give him a better surface to sit on. We also found an ADA approved faucet for their claw foot tub that has a hand held shower attached, and it is really pretty! Lani and Rik ordered it this past weekend so it should be arriving soon. Thankfully I found it at Home Depot and it was very reasonably priced, online special!! During the walk through, it was also discussed about getting him a tub transfer bench, no more trying to get in or out of the tub!! This will also be great for Rik if she so chooses to use it! I will be also putting up a simple contraption for a shower curtain along the end of the tub so they can actually enjoy a shower without water going everywhere. A few hand safety bars will need to be installed in various places for their comfort. Basically, their home, with a few very simple modifications will be ready for Alvin's long awaited arrival home! I know he will do great once he returns.
Originally, tomorrow was his return appointment to OHSU for the removal of the hard neck collar, but now that he is at CMH those plans have had to be changed. His PCP has decided that anything having to do with his neck does need to be done at/with OHSU, it's a bummer, but whatever is best is...well, best! This appointment will be rescheduled for another time, hopefully sooner rather than later. Say more prayers!!
I also spoke with the SLP at CMH today and she brought in a few items for Alvin to try. Some custard and apple juice! He took about a half tsp of custard, pushed it around his mouth and did swallow it, with the assistance of a few sips of juice. He enjoyed the treat very much however it was just too thick! She asked if he had had a modified barium swallow yet, NO he hasn't. She was quite surprised that he had not had one. She said she will try to get him in tomorrow for one, or at least within a few days, all of this however must be approved by doctors!
I am convinced if we put a waffle and some of Rik's awesome strawberry jam in front of him it would be gone in a flash!! Lol not really, but soon.
I spent the afternoon with him today and we had a great time. I gave him his foot and leg massage, a real long one today, and he said many times how great it felt. I told him that my hands have never been so soft, so we both benefit from it! I do still kid with him about how many massages I am hoping to get once he is able, hey maybe it's a good therapy for his hands!!! Lol just love to tease him and catch him off guard sometimes. Keeps us both smiling! We also sat and watched War Wagon with John Wayne and Kurt Douglas. We watched the whole thing and neither of us fell asleep, must be a good movie! He even turned up the volume a bit when the nurse and I were talking, evidently we were TOO LOUD! It really made me laugh, yes I teased him about that too!
Since Monday he has been very quiet, not talking much. Everyone has been very concerned, today he explained to me why. When he talks, so much spit and gunk forms in his mouth it kind of gags him so then he has to use the suction which also makes him gag because sometimes he puts the wand in his mouth a little too deep. The thrush really makes his mouth "thick" but he has been handling the secretions pretty well. Just a wild process we all might just take for granted....
I look forward to working with both Alvin and Rik at their home! I am so thankful and blessed to have this opportunity! Talking with both of them I have expressed my dedication to helping them both heal, help with the house/yard and meals. This in itself is therapy for me too! Its a win win for everyone. One thing I mentioned to Al is that once things have settled at home, his first "chore" is to be at the kitchen table and mix his famous waffle batter. Just the stirring and measuring in itself is great for his hands and self esteem. I also look forward to taste testing possible very single waffle until it is just perfect... I am sure all of us will be tasting those waffles! I also plan on playing in the dirt with them, yes I said playing in the dirt.... I have a little table top greenhouse and we are going to see what we can grow... He misses his yard so much. Little bits at a time. I have so many ideas to help them resume regular activity I almost can't contain myself! It will make for some great pictures I am sure. I do also realize that this is a big challenge for all involved. There will be ups and downs, I am sure some tears, fears and accidents, but I would like to let everyone know I AM ready for whatever comes our way. I take this opportunity very seriously and will do anything in my power to educate myself as much as I can, everyday is a learning experience.
I also want to thank everyone for having faith and confidence in me. I am very excited and honored to be a big part of this family's recovery. I am not afraid to research, learn or ask for help or advice when I need it. Again I am saying "I" a lot but this is a team effort and I am thankful to be a part of it. If anyone has websites, advice, or anything that may help us all get through these trying times, I will listen and accept the input! My personal information is:

Hello everyone!!
Hank and I had a wonderful time visiting Isaac and his family! Little Laki is getting so big! He turned 6 months on Isaac's birthday! It was a nice visit!!
We left early Saturday morning and headed out to Warm Springs! Talk about heat!! Woooweee! Being a dry heat, it actually felt good. Besides we needed the glare off of our poor white bodies!
Alvin was pampered by Jan, she gave him a good foot rub on Saturday afternoon! Her and I made an arrangement while I was away, and he was sure to let me know today that she did a fabulous job! Thanks Jan!!
Last week I mentioned that Alvin was getting a new roommate, Don, and I had the pleasure of meeting him and he is a really great guy. Good spirits, talkative and just hanging in there until he goes home soon. Tonight or tomorrow he is going to be moved out of Al's room and down to the main floor though. Then Al will have his room back to himself. In my opinion it was a blessing to have Alvin talk with another that is "out of his element" being hurt and all. Maybe Al will realize that even "big boys" get broken.
Although the light at the end of the tunnel is quickly approaching for him! Evidently around the first of September, he should be heading home!! I am sure it is a little bittersweet for him to hear. The excitement of being at home, with Rik and Dudley, but a bit of uncertainty about the other things we all take for granted. I would probably be a little terrified myself!
Sometime this week should be his field trip home with the therapists. They will conduct a thorough walk through of his house, checking for potential walking hazards and that his basic needs will be available to him. Rik has already removed the large round rug that was under the dining room table, she put it upstairs in her sewing room. A family friend has also been by the house sanding the floor door jams, bringing them down a lot, hopefully enough so they are no longer a tripping hazard, but only the walk through will tell. I am sure this quick trip will be an emotional one. Once I find out the date, I will post. May need a few extra strength prayers for both Al and Rik that day, heck it will be emotional for Dudley too I am sure!
Monday, Rik had her follow up doctor appointment and her bill of health is clear! She looks much better and feels just as well. Thank you for all the prayers! She has just enough time to prepare herself too! It is going to be a big step for both of them. I am sure at times it will be trying, however if anyone can make it work out, these two will!
Alvin had a rough weekend evidently, but today he is much better! When Hank and I visited today Al and I told each other about a half a dozen times how much we missed each other! He is like ole buddy that I hang with everyday.... We both had withdrawals! Lol. Just thankful to be back and see Al working hard to better himself!
Today he ate some scrambled eggs, a banana and a little bit if apple juice! Next, he may have to try some mashed potatoes and gravy, of course not for breakfast! We joked about this today.
Over the next couple of weeks, there are going to be some trying times! The therapists are pushing him to maintain his own secretions not using the sucking machine as much, however this is easier said than done. Hoping it gets easier once the collar comes off. Again, he has another appointment at OHSU on the 24th, and HOPEFULLY the hard collar will come off.
Tomorrow I am going to give him another shave. It is time we get this mustache and goatee the final good riddance! And I also made a note to myself to hold onto the little trimmer extra tight so there are no more dropping on the face incidences! LOL
Well, hope you all enjoy the photos! I added a photo and a little something that Don's son wrote up about his dad.....

Happy HUMP day everyone!
All is going well here on the coast! Rik is feeling better, Alvin is doing dandy, and more visitors arriving!
Yesterday, I used my handy, dandy little trimmer and trimmed up under Al's nose and all over his "fuzz"! He also used his electric razor himself! This in itself is a huge achievement for him! It has been so long since he had the strength to hold the electric shaver! Although I cannot say the same. While I was using my pencil size trimmer on his erratic eye brows, I, yes, I dropped it right on his face!! I just couldn't believe it! I profusely apologized and thankfully he laughed about it and asked me to stick to under the nose area!! Lol just love him!! After the brutal trim, he said he felt like himself again! He was just beaming!! He really wanted Rik to see his fresh face so we texted the pic to Lani asking her to share....
I have a ton of photos to include in this blog, so I will try to keep it short...haha
Alvin's week so far has been fabulous. He is feeling good and strong, has been excelling in all of his therapies he is just down right movin' right along! I also included some pics of his PT!
Today Amber her husband Matt, their darling little Lucy, Bridgett and Kevin all arrived for a nice and hilarious visit! Lucy is just a little peanut, sweet heart through and through! She was playing with her mom and would run back over to GGpa Al, grab his legs, look right into his eyes and say, "HI" then take off again to find her mom. What a fabulous sight this was to be a part of! Alvin just boasts about Lucy giving him high 5's and those icy blue eyes-just like GGpa Al. Anyhow, moving on.
From what I understand, Rik hasn't been in to see Alvin for quite a few days. I am glad she is taking it easy, especially since she has already been in the hospital, I am sure she would rather be home. Glad to see her recovering well. I am sure she will be visiting her love as soon as she can, until then, al and I will keep up the clean shavenness....
I am going to try to squeeze in a foot rub between therapies tomorrow! I whipped up my own recipe for a massage lotion for his feet and arms, yeah, I really did!! He loves the smell, I rubbed a little on his right hand and we are making sure none of the scents or oils bother him. His poor feet are just starved for moisture, so I think this recipe might help. Cross your fingers!
Well I am going to stop jabbering and start adding pics, enjoy!!

Hope everyone survived the heat wave of the NW!! Except you Julia.... Heard you had your fire a blazin!! Lol
Last week was a huge whirl wind for Alvin! He had so many visitors, and enjoyed every moment! On Friday, he had a fruit smoothie! The SLP is really pushing for him to manage his own secretions so he can move on to a more solid menu! He is so ready for this, but again baby steps!
Today I asked him who all came to visit this past week, he started naming names boy.... April and her boys, Amber and her little darling Lucy, Dan & Amanda, Bridgett, Kevin, Jeff and a few from his clan....and of course all of us locals too! I tried to give Alvin time with his family while they were all here, so we kind of missed each other last week! Had to catch up with all the goings on goin on!
Alvin is still hanging in there! His new PT is back from her maternity leave and she sure seems spunky! Today she came dancing in to Al's room and asked him if he was ready to do the jig... His response, "not really, we should start with the two step!" Even when he dreads the workout, he always finds something fun to say instead of being negative! I assured him that since he was going to be working out so hard today, I would return to give him a nice long foot/leg rub and a hand/arm massage in the evening! And yes, I did return and make good on my word! He just loves it so much and is so appreciative!
Alvin had a great week last week. Didn't really have time to be down or anything other than happy to see so many concerned faces! April and the boys attended a PT session and took a video and several pictures while she was here. I will try to post some of them too!
When I arrived earlier in the day, walking into Alvin's room, I was so happy to see his attire! Yep, he had on jeans and a Hawaiian shirt. He said he was ready for his tropical getaway!!! He really did look at ease and comfortable. He wore these clothes all day! What a great change for him! His darling wife also packed a pair of shorts, like he would be wearing if he were home. Every little achievement counts and makes it just that much more bearable for him! I just know he is feeling overdue to go home! He was also quick to tell me what he had for breakfast.... Chocolate pudding! He said he ate a few spoonfuls and it tasted heavenly!
Linda & Chet made it by this afternoon also! Sorry I missed them, they are a wonderful bunch of people!! Al was happy to have seen them though, it had been before Matthews wedding they last visited! (I think!) they sure had a lot going on at there place, and the wedding showed all their efforts! It was so fabulous!
Happy birthday to Julia this past weekend! Al got a chance to talk to her on speaker phone, another nice treat for him and her I am sure!
A few other birthdays that are coming up are Isaac, 23 on 8/12, and Lani on 8/20! Hank & I are going to visit Isaac and family this weekend! Will take lots of pics of our trip to share with Alvin. They last visited on Mothers Day weekend, and headed home the day following Al's fall, so Laki, our grandson has grown like a weed I am sure!
Rick had another doctors appointment today. Her pneumonia is having a terrible time going away. Her right lung shows signs of still more illness, so she is on another course of mess to help nip it in the bud... Check up next week! Say a couple extra prayers for her health to strengthen please!
As I posted previously, Al's next OHSU appointment is on 8/24. Lani was going to call the doctor up there and see if the new X-rays could be done here at CMH, to spare Alvin another grueling trip to Portland. If the schedule changes I will update as I find out!
I hope this message finds everyone in happiness and good health!
